Awrad al-Tariqa al-Shadhiliyya (in English: Invocations of the Shadhili Order) has been carefully compiled and corrected by Sheikh Nuh Ha Mim Keller from manuscript copies found in the Egyptian Library. This invaluable work houses a timeless collection of blessed litanies and prayers from the esteemed pole (qutb) and succour (ghawth) Abul Hasan al-Shadhili (d. 658/1260). Authenticated through consensus from the earliest written sources, these invocations serve as a direct channel to the teachings of this illustrious saint.
Sheikh Nuh Keller was granted authorization by Sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Shaghouri (d. 2004) of Syria to recite and impart these invocations to seekers who yearn for their spiritual benefits. One radiant jewel within this compilation is the powerful litany Hizb al-Bahr or ‘The Litany of the Sea’, resonating with seekers across generations. This profound invocation, preserved in its Arabic magnificence, encapsulates the essence of the ocean’s depths and the soul’s longing for divine connection.
The Arabic-only edition, first published in 1997 and updated in 2006, is now available in both Naskh and Mughali calligraphic scripts.
The bilingual translation, Invocations of the Shadhili Order, published in 1998, includes the eloquent departing injunction by the late Moroccan master Muhammad ibn al-Siddiq al-Ghumari (d. 1993).Â
The work also comprises litanies by other luminaries of the Shadhili Order, such as al-Wadhifa or ‘The Work’, consisting of the Salat al-Mashishiyya, a Blessing upon the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him), attributed to Abul Hasan’s sheikh, ‘Abd al-Salam ibn Mashish, interspersed with beautiful dhikrs and prayers by Abul Mawahib al-Tunisi, followed by an addendum by the great Libyan master Muhammad Dhafir al-Madani. Two captivating mystic odes by Sheikh al-Shaghouri close this book of prayers.
